It has actually been an enjoyably challenging and fascinating course, solidifying my decision that double majoring in Biology and Biological Engineering was a wise recent move. _____________________________________________________________________________________ The Optimal Procrastination Technique: How to trick yourself into thinking that youre writing a report I would like to share with you an amazing strategy Iâ€™ve had the pleasure of discovering via 20.109 this semester. You see, through tireless effort, countless attempts, and endless hours dedicated to grinding out reports for this course, I have finally discovered the most optimal procrastination technique. It is so effective, in fact, that at times it will irrefutably convince you that it is not procrastination, but work of the utmost and immediate importance. It may seem difficult to implement at first glance, but believe me, once you train yourself to stop the urge to write your results down and get the report over with, you will find this technique very easy to master and even quite enjoyable. In the end, you might figure that is it too overwhelming or unnecessary to actually write the report anyway, and your problem is solved! Curious? There are two key steps to for this process to work. 1) Read all of the related literature. ALL of it. Read it in depth and pay attention to all the details. Follow the tangentially-related references and whatever you do, donâ€™t stop reading until youâ€™ve learned the complete history and current state of the field. Figure 1: Schematic demonstrating the process from a more relatable starting point. However, this is biological engineering research, so I recommend you begin the voyage from PubMed, or at least google scholar. (Xkcd 2007). I know, it sounds quite challenging at first. After all, you might just read a few papers and feel like you have a pretty good understanding of what is going on in general and how it fits into the experiments you did in class. DO NOT LET THIS FEELING FOOL YOU. I repeat, you have not learned enough yet. For example, you have to understand that itâ€™s important to read beyond just all of the literature on â€œKu80 related NHEJ-repair in CHO cells,â€ which is probably under 10 papers anyway. Have you at least learned everything about the Ku80 protein? Do you understand its crystal structure? Whatyou didnâ€™t know the crystal structure was elucidated in 2001? Then how are you to possibly understand the molecular mechanism by which it resects double stranded DNA breaks? Arenâ€™t you curious about the differential repair results of your specific cut topology? I mean itâ€™s your precious, darling, unique break-site architecture for crying out loud! Once you feel like you sufficiently unders tand enzyme-DNA dynamics, you can move onto exploring all of DNA repair, or at least homologous repair which you can frequently mentally compare. Donâ€™t forget to really explore all the sub-branches, mechanisms, and implications. Itâ€™s also really important that you donâ€™t have a system for organizing all the useful portions of the literature that you readâ€"downloading entire pdfs and dumping them into a folder or bookmarking the tab (try to keep switching it up for fun) should work fine. If thereâ€™s anything you donâ€™t understand, a method or a term, immediately open a new tab (Figure 1) and learn about that until your computer overheats or the deadline for the report has passed. Take home message: Donâ€™t feel limited in your exploration! Remember, the point of your MIT education is to learn as much as possible. 2) Make all of your figures before you write anything. Then continuously remake them. Generate many types of visuals from the same data set. Keep changing them as you find little errors or large mistakes in reasoning. Try to make a large supplementary figure section to make sure your reader has a thoroughly comprehensive visual guide to your report. This is the fun part, so give yourself every excuse to keep working on them. Ok, now that you have sharpened your critical reading skills, itâ€™s time to move on to the artsy design skills youâ€™ve dreamed of developing ever since you first used Microsoft paint in second grade. In fact, for nostalgia or for lack of more complex software, you should probably do all your figures in Microsoft paint. Sure you can plan them out in PowerPoint or Illustrator, but make sure to always drift back to Paint for any finishing touches. See how fun it is to manipulate each pixel? There is such a joy in eyeballing where things should be without those pesky guidelines always snapping and giving away the alignment solution! Make sure to spend a lot of time on font, text size, color palette, and especially about positioning the images into your report. This last step is particularly key because you have no idea how the text in your report is going to ultimately look like, so you might as well define it with images first. The text will then easily follow into the spaces youâ€™ve confined. After all, if your report doesnâ€™t look publication quality then how can it possibly contain useful information? So definitely make sure that the figures, and not the text, carry your research. This is also where many versions of the same image come inâ€"if it doesnâ€™t look â€œprettyâ€ then have you tried changing the significance threshold so your error bars are smaller? You might as well take off the bottom error bars that annoyingly cross the axis anyway, since your audience is scientifically literate and understands that the range is symmetrical. Also, try to log transform your data and otherwise deviate from any â€œoverly-simpleâ€ representation to really show that you are a researcher concerned with presenting compelling and clear visual results. Oh god waitâ€"is that a formatting inconsistency? Remake your figures and watch as they grow more beautiful and more plentiful! Hopefully someday research can progress to where readers can follow the images and just rea d between the lines, you know? Then you donâ€™t have to explain anything; just look at the graph people! After youâ€™ve exhausted all possible data files and their representations, you should contemplate a side-career as a picture book author, which is perfectly suited for your visually-dominating, textually-minimalistic approach. Congratulations! After these steps you should have a lot more files on your computer than when you started! You really have done so much work on this report; you temporarily know everything ever and just look at all those figures!! In fact, at this point you should feel pretty finished, since the remainder of the report is just filling in the wordsâ€"trivial. In fact, it probably feels pointless to detail your results now anyway since youâ€™ve realized itâ€™s all mostly been done before, more carefully and much more impressively in the actual literature. So you should probably just go take a nap, since it took a lot of effort and time to truly master the most productive procrastination approach to large writing projects. You only lose 1/3 of a grade per day for late work, so I encourage you to continue implementing this process after the initial due date. Good luck! _____________________________________________________________________________________ All of the above advice was directly from experience, hah. It turns out that my new love for reading scientific literature was procrastination all along?! Anyway, as a junior, I feel like I have experienced a complete learning shift at MIT this year. The learning shift is roughly from learning how to problem-solve, to learning how to communicate the results of your problem-solving. In the past three months, I have written more technical writing (due to class work and UROP) than the sum of all months prior in my life. This has involved a complete change in habits and mindset. Previously, it has not been difficult to â€œget byâ€, as in to pass classes, through adequate exam performance. Whether through regurgitation or manipulation of knowledge (even hastily acquired cursory knowledge from the night before turned morning of), a problem could always be attempted and partial credit could always be earned for effort, synthesis of ideas, and correct train of thoughts (trains of thought? trains of thoughts? being on the right track? all aboard the thought-train!), even if the final answer was incorrect or incomplete. Now, incomplete or incorrect results wonâ€™t cut it. The requirement now is not only functioning results, but the ability to describe the background, production, and implications of aforementioned results in a technical, concise, and effective manner. This year Ive really grown in my academic realm, and now Im feeling the time limit before graduation sink in. Now that Im finally mastering MITs intensity and becoming deeply engrossed in my field, I realize I only have one year left and I should already be making plans for the future (what whyyyy I just got hereeeeee). The main skills Ive been developing is being able to grind work out consistently instead of just before (or after) deadlines, and not have a fear of and self-defeating approach to writing. Therefore, I welcome the blarghonetowebosphere (Figure 2) reading my experiences even if Im irrationally nervous about (or maybe just unnecessarily dreading/making a big deal of) writing them, and I will hopefully proceed to pump out more stream-of-consciousness posts about MIT life before its too late*. How to Email Professors at Prospective Grad Schools

As an applicant to graduate school you have probably wondered more than once exactly what professors look for when they select students. WouldnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t it be easier if you could just ask them? Before you go any further, let me warn you that emails can backfire. Many applicants email professors at graduate programs they wish to attend and receive terse replies, or perhaps most commonly, no replies. For example, consider this question from a reader: I am trying to figure out a topic that would be most suitable for me. I have reached out to many professors with little luck. Occasionally, they will share articles, but rarely will I get a response to a question. My questions range from graduate opportunities to specifics about their work.Ã‚ This readerÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s experience is not unusual.Ã‚ So what gives? Are graduate professors simply rude? Perhaps, but also consider the following contributors to the poor responses from faculty. Figuring out What You Want to Study Is Your Job First and foremost, it seems that this reader needs to do more work before contacting prospective mentors. As an applicant, realize that choosing a field of study is your task and one that you should do before emailing professors at graduate programs. To do so, read widely. Consider the classes youve taken and what subfields interest you. This is the most important part: Talk with faculty at your university.Ã‚ Approach your professors for help. They should be your first line of advice in this regard. Ask Informed Questions, Not Ones Whose Answers Are Readily Available Before you email a professor for advice, Ã‚ be sure that you have done your homework. Dont ask questions about information that you can learn from a basic internet or database search. For example, information about a professors research and copies of articles are easily available online. Likewise, dont ask questions about the graduate program unless you have carefully reviewed all of the information on both the departments website and the professorÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s website. Professors might view answering such questions a waste of time. Moreover, asking questions about information that is readily available might signal naivetÃƒ © or, worse, laziness. This is not to say that you should never contact professors at prospective programs. Before you email a professor make sure that it is for the right reasons. Ask informed questions that show that you are familiar with his or her work and the program and simply seek clarification on a few specific topics.Ã‚ Ã‚ Three basic guidelines for emailing professors at prospective graduate programs: Do not inundate the professor with questions. Ask only one or two specific questions and you will be much more likely to get a reply than if you ask a series of questions.Be specific. Ã‚ DonÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t ask questions that will require more than a sentence or two in response.Ã‚ In-depth questions about their research usually fall in this area. Remember that professors may be pressed for time. An email that looks like it will take more than a minute or two to answer may be ignored.DonÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t ask questions that are outside of a professorÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s purview. General questions about financial aid, how applicants are selected by the program, and housing, for example, Ã‚ fall into this area. What should you ask prospective graduate mentors?Probably the question that you are most interested in is whether the professor is accepting students. That simple, direct, question is most likely to yield a response. How Do You Ask a Professor Whether He or She Is Taking Students? In a simple email,Ã‚ explain that you are very interested in the professorÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s research on X and, hereÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s the important part, would like to know whether he or she is accepting students.Ã‚ Keep the email brief, just a couple of sentences. A short, concise email will likely yield a response, even if it is a Ã¢â‚¬Å"No, I am not accepting students.Ã¢â‚¬ What Next? Thank the professor for his or her response, regardless. If the faculty member is accepting students then work on tailoring your application to his or her lab. Should you start a dialogue? You canÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t predict how a professor will respond to multiple emails. Some might welcome them, but it is better playing it safe and avoid emailing the professor again unless you have specific questions about his or her research. Faculty doesnt want to mentor students who require hand-holding, and you want to avoid being perceived as needy. Should you decide to ask a specific question about his or her research, remember that brevity is key in receiving a response.

Figures were often elongated and exaggerated, the poses were creative and complex poses. The History Channel Website) There were a lot of important artist who emerged from this period, but the most famous artist would be Leonardo Ad Vinci. Leonardo De Vinci was born in 1452, in Florence and died in 1519 in France. He was an artist and inventor. He is known as the Ã¢â‚¬Å"Renaissance ManÃ¢â‚¬ because he was an inventor, scientist, sculptor, and a great artist. Ad Vinci had many famous works. One of his most famous works is the Ã¢â‚¬Å"Last SupperÃ¢â‚¬ (1495-98). The last supper is a painting of the last meal Jesus shared with his apostles. It also shows Jesus isolated, four groups of threes and Judas in the shadows clutching money. The History Channel Website) Another famous piece by Ad Vinci as the Ã¢â‚¬Å"Mona LisaÃ¢â‚¬ (1 503-05), which is a painting of a woman. This painting would be an example of Mannerism art. Ad Vinci was also famous for the Ã¢â‚¬Å"The Virgin of the RocksÃ¢â‚¬ (1485). Some other great artists were Michelangelo Bonaparte (1475-1564), and Raphael Sansei(1483-1 520). Michelangelo was famous for painting the Sistine Chapel ((1508-12) and sculpting the Ã¢â‚¬Å"David in his native FlorenceÃ¢â‚¬ (1501-04). Raphael Sansei was famous for the Ã¢â‚¬Å"The School of AthensÃ¢â‚¬ (1508-11). The Ã¢â‚¬Å"School of AthensÃ¢â‚¬ shows philosophers such as Pluto coming together. Another great artist of 16th Century was Titan Ã¢â‚¬Å"Meeting of Bacchus and OrdainedÃ¢â‚¬ (1 522), he was famous for using rich luminous colors. Geothermal Energy - Tapping the Earths Heat Supply As the costs of fuel and electricity rise, geothermal energy has a promising future. Underground heat can be found anywhere on Earth, not just where oil is pumped, coal is mined, where the sun shines or where the wind blows. And it produces around the clock, all the time, with relatively little management needed. Heres how geothermal energy works. Geothermal Gradients No matter where you are, if you drill down through the Earths crust you will eventually hit red-hot rock. Miners first noticed in the Middle Ages that deep mines are warm at the bottom, and careful measurements since that time have found that once you get past surface fluctuations, solid rock grows steadily warmer with depth. On average, this geothermal gradient is about one degree Celsius for every 40 meters in depth or 25 C per kilometer. But averages are just averages. In detail, the geothermal gradient is much higher and lower in different places. High gradients require one of two things: hot magma rising close to the surface, or abundant cracks allowing groundwater to carry heat efficiently to the surface. Either one is sufficient for energy production, but having both is best. Spreading Zones Magma rises where the crust is being stretched apart to let it rise- in divergent zones. This happens in the volcanic arcs above most subduction zones, for instance, and in other areas of crustal extension. The worlds largest zone of extension is the mid-ocean ridge system, where the famous, sizzling-hot black smokers are found. It would be great if we could tap heat from the spreading ridges, but that is possible in only two places, Iceland and the Salton Trough of California (and Jan Mayen Land in the Arctic Ocean, where no one lives). Areas of continental spreading are the next-best possibility. Good examples are the Basin and Range region in the American West and East Africas Great Rift Valley. Here there are many areas of hot rocks that overlie young magma intrusions. The heat is available if we can get to it by drilling, then start extracting the heat by pumping water through the hot rock. Fracture Zones Hot springs and geysers throughout the Basin and Range point to the importance of fractures. Without the fractures, there is no hot spring, only hidden potential. Fractures support hot springs in many other places where the crust is not stretching. The famous Warm Springs in Georgia is an example, a place where no lava has flowed in 200 million years. Steam Fields The very best places to tap geothermal heat have high temperatures and abundant fractures. Deep in the ground, the fracture spaces are filled with pure superheated steam, while groundwater and minerals in the cooler zone above seal in the pressure. Tapping into one of these dry-steam zones is like having a giant steam boiler handy that you can plug into a turbine to generate electricity. The best place in the world for this is off limits- Yellowstone National Park. There are only three dry-steam fields producing power today: Lardarello in Italy, Wairakei in New Zealand and The Geysers in California. Other steam fields are wet- they produce boiling water as well as steam. Their efficiency is less than the dry-steam fields, but hundreds of them are still making a profit. A major example is the Coso geothermal field in eastern California. Geothermal energy plants can be started in hot dry rock simply by drilling down to it and fracturing it. Then water is pumped down to it and the heat is harvested in steam or hot water. Electricity is produced either by flashing the pressurized hot water into steam at surface pressures or by using a second working fluid (such as water or ammonia) in a separate plumbing system to extract and convert the heat. Novel compounds are under development as working fluids that could boost efficiency enough to change the game. Lesser Sources Ordinary hot water is useful for energy even if it isnt suitable for generating electricity. The heat itself is useful in factory processes or just for heating buildings. The entire nation of Iceland is almost completely self-sufficient in energy thanks to geothermal sources, both hot and warm, that do everything from driving turbines to heating greenhouses. Geothermal possibilities of all these kinds are shown in a national map of geothermal potential issued on Google Earth in 2011. The study that created this map estimated that America has ten times as much geothermal potential as the energy in all of its coal beds. Useful energy can be obtained even in shallow holes, where the ground isnt hot. Heat pumps can cool a building during summer and warm it during winter, just by moving heat from whichever place is warmer. Similar schemes work in lakes, where dense, cold water lies on the lake bottom. Cornell Universitys lake source cooling system is a notable example. Earths Heat Source To a first approximation, Earths heat comes from radioactive decay of three elements: uranium, thorium, and potassium. We think that the iron core has almost none of these, while the overlying mantle has only small amounts. The crust, just 1 percent of the Earths bulk, holds about half as much of these radiogenic elements as the whole mantle beneath it (which is 67% of the Earth). In effect, the crust acts like an electric blanket upon the rest of the planet. Lesser amounts of heat are produced by various physicochemical means: freezing of liquid iron in the inner core, mineral phase changes, impacts from outer space, friction from Earth tides and more. And a significant amount of heat flows out of the Earth simply because the planet is cooling, as it has since its birth 4.6 billion years ago. The exact numbers for all these factors are highly uncertain because the Earths heat budget relies on details of the planets structure, which is still being discovered. Also, Earth has evolved, and we cannot assume what its structure was during the deep past. Finally, plate-tectonic motions of the crust have been rearranging that electric blanket for eons. The Earths heat budget is a contentious topic among specialists. Thankfully, we can exploit geothermal energy without that knowledge.
